4.4 magnitude earthquake shakes Fort St. John area

No damage was done after an earthquake rattled the Fort St. John area yesterday afternoon. The quake’s epicentre was about 116 kilometres northwest of the community.

Natural Resources Canada says tremors were felt lightly in both Fort St. John and Charlie Lake. The agency says they will have experts look into the 4.4 magnitude earthquake to determine if it was naturally occurring or if it is linked to hydraulic fracturing in the area.

The area has experienced both natural and fracking related earthquakes in the past, including a 4.4 magnitude quake in August of last year that struck about 50 kilometres north of yesterday’s.
