Drag Wars roaring back to Grande Prairie

Drag Wars returns to the Grande Prairie Airport once again this weekend. Races begin this afternoon at 5 with the King of the Street event, in which any street legals can compete.

Jennifer Metituk, one of the event organizers, says anyone who would like to test their mettle in the King of the Street event can register between 4 and 7 today, with the races starting at 5 pm.

“It costs $40, you need a helmet. There are a few other little requirements that you have to have but if your car is in good shape and you have good tires, you’ll have no problem.”

This event only returns to Grande Prairie every couple of years, but organizers say they want it to exciting and fun for those who come out to enjoy it.

Metituk says tje event here in is different because it’s on a pop up course.

“It’s really not just about drag racing, if that was the case we would just do it at the regular drag track and just do regular drag racing, but this is like drag racing on steroids. We have the car show, for which we sometimes get over 200 cars, we have the whole infield full of entertainment and food.”

The racing continues through Saturday and Sunday with events like the quick 16, street wars, and heads up racing.
