Spills like Nexen incident “unacceptable”: Energy Minister

Energy Minister Marg McCuaig-Boyd has called the Nexen pipeline spill “unacceptable”. The Dunvegan Central – Peace Notley MLA toured the site today with Alberta’s Environment Minister and members of the Fort McMurray First Nation. She says she concerned, not only in her role as Minister of Energy.

“As an Albertan, I’m concerned. We all want to know that when an incident like this happens, not only is it contained and cleaned up, but every possible effort is made to find out what went wrong and fix it, and prevent it from happening again anywhere.”

More than 131,000 barrels of emulsion leaked from a crack in the pipeline, and the company says it may have taken more than two weeks to be discovered, after the built-in detection system failed. McCuaig-Boyd says the results of the AER’s investigation will be made public.
