Nexen pipeline cleaned two weeks before leak discovered

It may take months for Nexen to find out what caused a pipeline to rupture and leak more than 31,000 barrels of emulsion near its Long Lake facility. The pipeline was only installed last year, but the company says it was shut down at the end of June to be cleaned, and was back in operation on June 29th, just over two weeks before the leak was discovered.

Cleanup is still underway, and at this point the company doesn’t know how long it will take. The roughly four acre spill area has been contained by berms and other equipment, and methods are being used to keep wildlife away, although a dead duck was found Sunday.
