The County of Grande Prairie is taking another step towards building on the communities economic development. County Council voted to direct administration to register the municipality for the Alberta Enterprise Group. County Reeve Bob Marshall says the benefit of joining the group is that it will help connect the region with industry members across the province while also sharing the opportunities available here.
“We see vehicles with “we’re hiring” on their tailgates around the Grande Prairie area, so we have a huge demand for skilled labour, so if we can connect with industry across the province, it helps us to promote the area and opportunities,” Marshall says.
Marshall explains this is another avenue municipal leaders can use to get in front of the government and advocate for the region, including talking to ministers and making connections.
“They have connections within the provincial government, so it’s about working with industry to see what opportunities, especially employment opportunities.”
“Even working with the polytechnic to round focusing what labour needs we require, specific skills, whether it’s truck driving, trades, STEM, or whatever it may be.”
Earlier in the summer, Marshall and county CAO Joulia Whittleton, attended a AEG event, where Minister of Environment and Protected Areas Rebecca Shulz was in attendance. The annual cost to be a member of the AEG is $3,000.
