Heading into the last weeks of summer, the RCMP is working to help residents prevent having their vehicles broken into or stolen.

According to Alberta RCMP, across the province, March, May and June saw the most vehicle thefts, with 2,397 reported incidents, while May through July had the most thefts from vehicles, with a three month total of 2,214 reports.

In the Grande Prairie area, between April and June, 93 motor vehicle thefts were reported, and 89 thefts from a motor vehicle.

RCMP officials say, “Simple habits and routines can greatly reduce your chances of being a victim vehicle related thefts.” Some of these tips include always ensuring your vehicle is locked and not leaving keys or garage door openers in your vehicle. Other things people are advised to not leave in their vehicles include important documents, loose change, electronics and sunglasses.

“Park your vehicle in well-lit areas and within sight. If you’re unable to park in a locked garage, keep outdoor lights on for added security.”

As of August 11, police say 4,500 reported thefts from a motor vehicle and 5,000 vehicles were reported stolen across Alberta.
