Tornado watch issued for MD of Greenview near Fox Creek

Some parts of Alberta are under a tornado watch, including the Municipal District of Greenview near Fox Creek. Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes.

“The most favourable timeframe for tornado development will be later this afternoon into this evening as the thunderstorms move northeast across north-central Alberta.”

It’s noted that hailstones up to baseball size will accompany any severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado. People in the region are urged to be prepared for severe weather and to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.”

If a tornado occurs, it’s recommended that people go indoors to a room on the lowest floor of the building away from outside walls and windows. People should leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelters, and move to a strong building if they can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.
