Suspect, officer injured during arrest of wanted man

A 32-year-old man is facing several charges after both he and an RCMP officer were injured while he reportedly resisted arrest. According to police, on Wednesday, July 12th, officers from several RCMP units, including Western Alberta Crime Reduction Unit, RCMP Police Dog Services, and Air Services searched a home in Cadotte Lake for wanted man Kyle Edward Ominayak.

“Officers attended a home in Cadotte Lake and, after a short search, located Ominayak hiding inside a couch. Ominayak resisted arrest, and a struggle ensued with him ultimately being subdued.”

According to police, Ominayak was injured during the struggle and was taken to hospital, treated, and released. During the arrest, one of the responding officers injured his hand and was taken to hospital as well and is now recovering at home.

Western Alberta Crime Reduction Unit Corporal John Learn says the unit focuses on those who cause the most harm to the community, but that also means they often pose a greater risk to the officers.

“We hope for the speedy recovery of our officer.”

The 32-year-old suspect is facing charges for resisting arrest, attempting to disarm an officer, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He is scheduled to appear in court in Peace River on Tuesday, July 18th.

On June 27th, police issued a notice to the public that Ominayak was wanted on numerous outstanding warrants for violent crimes. Officers had surrounded his home but it’s alleged the man fled into the nearby bush.
