While local MMA fighter Alex Martinez didn’t claim the top spot the welterweight category, he is still bringing home a silver medal from the 2015 IMMAF World Championships of Amateur MMA.
Martinez, along with 6 other members of team Canada, headed to Las Vegas last week for the competition.
Martinez earned his spot in the gold medal round after three victories in a row over fighters from Finland, France, and Poland. He faced off against William Starks of the United States on Saturday, losing the match up in a unanimous decision.
Martinez wasn’t the only member of Team Canada to medal, as Fort St. John based fighter Jamie Herrington earned a gold medal Saturday in the Women’s 145 lb category over Ireland’s Sinead Kavanaugh.
