Western Alberta unemployment rate drops in May

The unemployment rate in the economic region that includes Grande Prairie saw more than a half per cent drop last month.

According to Statistics Canada, western Alberta had an unemployment rate of 5.3 per cent in May 2023, down from 5.9 per cent in April.

The provincial unemployment rate, meanwhile, also saw a bit of a upward nudge at 5.7 per cent in May, down from 5.9 per cent in April. The provincial rate of unemployment remains above the national average, with a reported Canadian unemployment rate of 5.2 per cent last month, up from 5 per cent in April.
