City, County issue fire bans due to current weather and wildfire conditions

A fire ban has been issued for both the City of Grande Prairie, and the entirety of the County of Grande Prairie, including the towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith and Wembley.

The ban has been issued by the municipality because of current hot, dry and windy conditions, along with current wildfire activity.

According to the County of Grande Prairie, “The County Regional Fire Service is responding to the Peavine Creek Wildfire that crossed the BC-AB border near Preston Lake yesterday and is continuing to monitor the Boone Lake Complex in Saddle Hills County. Read the latest status update.”

Under the ban, all existing burning permits have been revoked and no new ones will be issued. As well all outdoor fires including recreational fire pits, open pit burning, charcoal briquettes, burning barrels, and cooking fires are not allowed, along with fireworks. The use of propane appliances, such as barbecues, is permitted.

There is no current Off-highway vehicles bank in the region, however, the fire ban will remain in effect until conditions change.
