New columbarium on the way for Grande Prairie Cemetery

The city is looking to create more room at the Grande Prairie Cemetery for cremated remains.

Roughly $50,000 has been earmarked for the purchase of a public columbarium, which is a room or a building with niches for funeral urns to be stored in.

Parks operations manager Josy Burroughs says the growing trend of cremations here needs to be accommodated for.

“In the Grande Prairie Cemetary there are more cremations now. We were hovering around 50 per cent and in the region it’s higher. What we see in the Grande Prairie Cemetery, just based on statistics from the past 5 years, we’re looking at 50/50 or slightly more.”

Burroughs says the city is looking for a structure with over 100 niches, but once the tender is out they will have a better idea of what kind of structure is within that $50,000 price range.
