Fox Creek wildfire projections prompt mandatory evacuation, evacuation alert

Recent information from Alberta Forestry about the Fox Creek wildfire has prompted MD of Greenview officials to issue a mandatory evacuation order and an evacuation alert for parts of the area. In a video update released Friday, Regional Fire Chief Wayne Brown, RCMP Sargent Chris Power and Greenview CAO Stacey Wabick explained the worst-case scenario projections for the fire show an increased risk to the Hamlet of Little Smoky and surrounding area. This information prompted the mandatory evacuation order that was issued at 6:46 p.m. Thursday and the subsequent evacuation alert issued at 10:42 a.m. Friday.

Brown says throughout Friday they are hoping to get additional projections and analysis.

“I think as we are all aware when you are dealing with a wildfire it is quite dynamic, but we are trying to react and ensure your [the resident’s] protection,” Brown says.

Sgt. Power says RCMP members, along with the MD of Greenview Peace Officers are in the affected areas knocking on doors to either make residents aware of the order or advising those in the alert area to be prepared to evacuate with an hour’s notice.

“For those who are leaving their properties, take comfort in knowing that the police will be there to patrol the communities affected and keep your properties safe,” Power says.

As of 9:00 p.m. Thursday, the Fox Creek wildfire was reported as being approximately 21,568 hectares in size and burning out of control.

According to officials they are in continuous contact with forestry and working to get more resources into the area to help crews fight the fire.
