Cooler temperatures help crews catch up with several Greenview wildfires

Fire crews continue to fight several fires in the MD of Greenview, with officials saying crews have been able to catch up with the Sturgeon Lake and Little Puskwaskau fires thanks to cooler temperatures and low wind speeds in the area. According to Tuesday night’s update from the MD, crews are hoping to continue to see cooperative weather in the coming days.

As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, the Sturgeon Lake fire was estimated to be 3,765 hectares in size, and in the last 36 hours no structures were reported as lost. Officials say a small portion of the fire has been contained, while the Little Paswaskau Fire was reported as being around 1,189 hectares in size, with no further structures reported as lost overnight Monday.

As of Tuesday night, the Fox Creek and Little Smoky fire is around 21,568 hectares in size, with crews from Alberta Forestry, Greenview Fire-Rescue, and the Fox Creek Fire Department fighting the fire. Crews are working on containment lines, with officials saying the plan is to have the containment work done by the end of day Tuesday. According to the wildfire update from the MD, crews have seen progress on the fire, with cooperative weather playing a role.

The Bald Mountain fire south of Grovedale is approximately 8,365 hectares in size and firefighters are said to be monitoring its activity, with no substantial growth having been seen over the past 24 hours.
