County commits $20K to geothermal research

A research project planning to look into the feasibility of geothermal energy in our region has received up to $20,000 worth of support from the County of Grande Prairie.

Researchers from the University of Alberta and Innovate Alberta began approaching local municipalities looking for support earlier this spring. They are looking to build portfolios for ten different sites in Alberta, three of which are here in the Grande Prairie area.

The project is expected to get started sometime in 2016 once more sources of funding have been secured.

The city has also been approached with a request, and while they were enthusiastic about they idea, they have yet to come up with just how much funding they would like to provide to the project.
