Crews continue to expand fire guard around Dunes West wildfire

Fire crews near the Dunes West wildfire continue to expand fire guards, and are looking to establish a full parimeter around the out of control blaze.

According to the Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership, crews are hoping to surround the fire on its north face, while using the Wapiti River as a natural guard to the south.

GPREP officials say crews are also working with local agricultural producers on preventative maintenance work in their fields. Homeowners and businesses are being asked to review their properties and take proactive steps to protect their properties.

Financial assistance applications will go live Tuesday for families who have been displaced due to a wildfire for seven consecutive days or more. The registration for evacuation re-entry has been temporarily moved online, those who meet the criteria can register and will receive a a response phone call.

So far there are no changes to evacuation orders and alerts, and the size of the wildfire is still estimated at 1,700 hectares, and remains classified as out of control.
