Information session to be held for wildfire evacuees

An information session will be held for evacuees from the Dunes West Wildfire Monday. County of Grande Prairie officials and members of the Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership will give them an update on the status of the fire north of the Wapiti River at the TARA Centre at Evergreen Park at 7 p.m.

GPREP says additional resources are on the way to Grande Prairie to support the local fire response. They include additional helicopters with buckets, seven fire engines, and an estimated 100 firefighters to provide relief and shift change support to the local responders.

As of 10:30 p.m. Sunday, the wildfire continues to burn out-of-control at an estimated size of 1,700 hectares. It’s reported fire crews are working to protect structures and critical infrastructure like power, gas, and water lines.

More fire guards are being established to remove fuel from the fire and slow it down. It’s noted that weather conditions continue to create a challenging firefighting situation.

There has been no change to the evacuation area and evacuation alert area since Saturday. Residents outside of the evacuation area are being encouraged to prepare by packing important documents, medications, and clothing/personal items for three days and having a plan for their pets.
