As of 3 p.m. Sunday, Highway 43 has reopened between the junction with Highway 733 near Bezanson and Highway 49 near Valleyview. Drivers are warned of poor visibility due to smoke in the area.
The highway was first closed went of Valleyview on Friday due to the wildfire in the region. A detour was set up using Township Road 700, but that was closed Saturday when the evacuation order for the region was expanded. In the meantime, drivers were encouraged to use Highway 2 and 49 to get around.
The fire on Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation is considered to be out-of-control and is estimated to be 2,000 hectares in size. As of 2:21 p.m. Sunday, Alberta Wildfire said it is on both sides of Highway 43.
