City gets GreenTRIP funding for new buses

The City has received $1.16 million to help cover the cost of new buses. Community Growth Director Koji Miyaji says the buses have already been purchased, thanks to the two-thirds GreenTRIP grant from the province.

“We’re looking at replacing the old buses that weren’t as comfortable, perhaps, and at the end of its life cycle. It adds new buses to the fleet we hope that’ll attract new passengers. It’s also to keep a certain quality of standard for the public transit system that’s here.”

The Green Transit Initiatives Program helps provide sustainable public transit alternatives for Alberta municipalities. Miyaji says they’re already looking at the second phase.

“We’re looking at buses again; we’re looking at some technology, possibly Smart Cards… information systems. Capital upgrades to the existing system, all in the hopes to improve the quality of public transit that we provide.”

The city’s portion for this round of buses is just under$627,000, and was approved in a previous capital budget.
