UPDATE: Stabbing suspect in serious condition

UPDATE #3:  The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has identified the stabbing suspect as a 28 year old man. He was transported to Edmonton where he is in serious condition. 

UPDATE #2: RCMP Major Crimes has confirmed that the attacks took place at Berland Open Lodge, about 50 kilometres from the Town of Fox Creek. The work camp is operated by DJ Catering, which is owned by Canada North Group. 

At this time, investigators believe the man in custody acted alone in his fatal knife attacks, and police are not looking for any other suspects. The victims identities are not being share. Autopsies are scheduled for later this week.

UPDATE: DJ Catering, a provider of remote workforce accommodations to the oil and gas industry in Alberta, has issued a statement on the fatal attack:

“We were deeply saddened by the incident that occurred today at one of our locations. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s families at this time.”

Two people have been killed in a stabbing at a work camp in the Fox Creek area. Just before 2 a.m. this morning, RCMP got reports of a man attacking people with a knife, and found the deceased at the scene.

The suspect was armed with a knife, and was shot by police. He was wounded and is being treated for his injuries.

At this point, the double homicide victims have not been identified, pending notification of next of kin.

Edmonton RCMP Major Crime Unit has been brought in to handle the investigation. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is also investigating the discharge of the officers’ firearms.
