Street sweeping crews hitting Grande Prairie streets

Drivers in the City of Grande Prairie are being asked to keep an eye out for street sweeping crews, with seasonal work starting on major routes.

Starting April 16th 10:00 p.m.work on arterial roads will happen 24 hours a day. Drivers are being urged to use caution when passing street sweepers, who will be travelling between 5 to 10 km/h when working.

Crews will be cleaning debris from arterial roads in the city including medians, concrete barriers, and boulevards. According to the city this will go until late May depending on weather. Once work on the major routes is complete, crews will begin on secondary roads, and finish with residential; which is expected to begin in late May and should be complete by the end of June according to the city.

Transportation Director for the city Wade Nellis says the seasonal work improves the appearance of the city’s roads.

“Help us create a clean and safe community by using caution when passing street sweepers,” Nellis says.

Debris collected during the seasonal work includes mud, dirt, rocks, leaves, and other natural debris. According to the city, sweeping on city trails has also begun.

The County of Grande Prairie is also advising residents spring street sweeping has begun on paved roads in the region. Crews are scheduled to do the work throughout the coming weeks, but the schedule is dependent on weather conditions.
