City starts search for new Chief of Police

The City of Grande Prairie has started its search for the Chief of Police of the Grande Prairie Police Service. The head of the new police force will report directly to the city’s police commission and will be responsible for its leadership and direction.

According to the city, Grande Prairie’s police force will be the first municipal service established in the province since 1956, offering the chosen candidate a unique opportunity to develop and lead the organization with a focus on oversight, transparency, and recruitment. Mayor Jackie Clayton says the chosen candidate will also be on the floor level of building the service.

“The City eagerly anticipates the establishment of the Grande Prairie Police Commission and the key role that they will play in selecting the right candidate to lead the GPPS,” Clayton says.

The chosen candidate will lead a team of both sworn officers and civilian workers while working with the City of Grande Prairie, the RCMP, provincial and federal governments, community groups, and police services across the country and province. The deadline to apply for the posting is May 31, 2023 but recruitment will reportedly continue until a suitable candidate is found and hired.
