Two Grande Prairie RCMP officers committed no wrongdoing during a 2020 shooting according to a report released by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team. According to the provincial police watchdog, the Grande Prairie RCMP officers were justified in their actions during the December 8, 2020 incident which left one man dead.
According to the report from ASIRT, around 8:15 p.m. on that day, Grande Prairie RCMP was called to the Petro-Canada gas station on 132 Avenue and 100 Street for a domestic violence incident. When officers arrived on the scene the suspect exited the vehicle with a gun and police directed him to drop the gun, which he did not do.
During the interaction, the suspect fired the gun in the direction of the RCMP officers, which led to the officers returning fire. The suspect was hit multiple times and died on the scene.
According to the report, “under the circumstances, as then faced by the officers, no other use of force options were reasonably available for attempted use. Reliance on using their firearms to incapacitate this threat was reasonably necessary.”
