Warmer temperatures close another outdoor rink season in Grande Prairie

With the ice not being thick enough to skate on safely because of the warmer weather in Grande Prairie, another outdoor rink season has come to a close.

City of Grande Prairie Community Recreation Development Supervisor Katie Biberdorf says the past season was a successful one with community members taking advantage of the Muskoseepi Park Pond. Along with the pond’s public use, she says the pond also hosted the Grande North Winter Festival and New Year’s Eve festivities.

“The pond stayed open as long as it could but it is just warming up so much now that it is not safe to skate on the rinks anymore,” Biberdorf says.

With the outdoor skating facility closed, Biberdorf says there are still plenty of recreational activities for people to do in the city, including walking and biking trails through Muskoseepi Park and South Bear Creek Park, along with drop-in opportunities throughout the week at the Activity and Reception Centre.

“Our mobile skatepark is currently located there, and it will be moving outside once the spring conditions permit, so we will have a mobile skate park roaming around the city.”

Biberdorf adds anyone looking for more information about recreation options around Grande Prairie can find additional links on the city’s website.
