Wheat Kings drop NWJHL championship in triple OT

The County of Grande Prairie Wheat Kings lost Monday’s game to the Fort St. John Huskies 5 – 4 in triple overtime, giving the Huskies back-to-back North West Junior Hockey League Championship titles.

The Wheat Kings were the first to get on the board in the game six competition, leading the visiting Huskies 2 – 0 heading into the second period with goals from Alex Beardmore and Mason Kyllo. The Huskies dominated the second period scoring three in a row, giving the reigning champions a 3 – 2 lead going into the third.

The Grande Prairie team tied the game within the first minute of the third period with a goal from Alex Beardmore. Adam Morrow scored just before the eight-minute mark of the third frame for the Wheat Kings, giving the Peace Country team their last lead of the series. Fort St. John responded to the Wheat King’s lead just before the halfway point of the period. Neither team was able to break the tie in regulation, forcing the game into overtime. It would take over 42 minutes of extra action for the tie to be broken, with the Huskies finding the back of the Grande Prairie team’s net.

The win gives the Huskies a 4 – 2 series lead, winning them their fourth consecutive league championship. The Huskies will now represent the NWJHL at the Provincial Championships in Okotoks at the beginning of April.
