City continues making steps toward Equity, Diversity and Inclusion mandatory training for city staff

The community social development team plans to make equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) training mandatory at city workplaces.

The initiative started back in 2019 when it comes to recognizing and training city employees on the importance of being diverse and inclusive. Community Social Development Director Angela Sutherland says senior management within the city has endorsed the push to make the training mandatory.

“Not only working internally but also working with our external partners on expanding our learning and leveraging each other’s support in an area where we all become more diverse and inclusive.’ says Sutherland  “It’s about as a community how we come together and make sure we are all on the same page and speak the same language when we speak about what diverse inclusion really means for our community.”

As of December 2022, 170 city employees took the EDI training in person, Sutherland says at the moment making sure the training is accessible to everyone is their priority including creating online spaces and providing training frequently.

The City of Grande Prairie is funding this initiative and there will be more information as the work continues.
