Beaverlodge native Geoff Walker celebrates back to back Brier championship

With a 7-5 score Team Canada (Team Gushue) has won back to back Tim Hortons Brier Championships.

Lead for Team Canada Geoff Walker says during Sundays championship game, the match up against Team Manitoba looked like it was going to come down to last rock. Heading into the 10th end the Beaverlodge native explains their team had control with throwing the last rock (the hammer).

“That was the goal going in was to hopefully be tied with hammer coming home, and give Brad a shot to win. – We have all the faith he is going to make a big shot in that moment,” Walker says. “It was a tough fought game, both teams you know they played great, so you knew it was going to come down to the last rock.”

Looking forward from the Brier, Walker says there are a couple of goals on the horizon for Team Canada, the first is winning the upcoming World Championship. Walker says looking back at lasts years competition in Las Vegas, it was a tough final against Sweden. He adds it would be nice to win the World Competition again since the last time they won was in 2017. The second goal is preparing for the next Olympic run.

“It is probably going to be the last Olympic run for, I’m not sure about myself yet, but I know for probably my teammates. So I think we are all trying to work as hard as we can for the next three years, leave it all out there and see what we can win.”

Walker says he is grateful for all the support he has received from the Town of Beaverlodge and the community.
