Grande Prairie has a goal to end homeless by 2019, and has now signed on to a Canada-wide campaign that could help. 21 communities across the country have launched an initiative that aims to permanently house 20,000 of the most vulnerable homeless people by July 1, 2018.
It’s estimated that on any given night, roughly 35,000 people sleep in a shelter or on a street. The 20,000 Homes Campaign plans to get to know those people through a simple survey done locally, that will help GP-based staff prioritize entry into housing based on urgent need.
The focus is on chronically homeless people with complex needs. It’s thought that Grande Prairie has around 360 homeless people.
