Organizers ready to get 13th Relay for Life underway

One of the Canadian Cancer Society’s biggest fundraising events of the year in Grande Prairie is back once again this evening. The Relay for Life will be held out at Evergreen Park this year with the 12 hour relay starting at 7 pm.

Revenue Development Coordinator Jaclyn Olsen says it will be an evening of celebration and remembrance.

“We have the families coming out kicking off things with the Survivors Lap. It’s walking for those people who have overcome their journey or are in the process of working through their cancer story. That leads into the 12 hour relay and at about 11 o’clock we’re going to be doing our twilight luminary ceremony as always.”

Much of the funds raised by the Relay for life go towards supporting the fight against cancer in our own community. Olsen says that includes things like the new cancer bunker that will be included in the regional hospital.

“Being around friends and family and loved ones is part of the treatment process so when you can stay local it just kind of helps with the recovery process. This is a community where we show up and we help each other, Grande Prairie has always been great for that.”

There are 54 teams registered so far but Olsen says those who just want to show up to make a donation and take part this evening are always welcome.
