A special ceremony at the Royal Canadian Legion Friday evening gave thanks to those that served Canada 75 years ago during the Second World War.
The event was jointly hosted by local MP Chris Warkentin and the Grande Prairie branch of the legion. Warkentin says getting the chance to meet and speak with meet Peace Region vets has been a very meaningful experience for him.
“What I’m finding is that they are, in some cases, opening up for the first time, telling stories that some of their closest family members haven’t even heard and so I think this is a great opportunity to really encourage them and show them that we are honouring them.”
The official 75th anniversary of Canada’s entrance into World War two was last fall, but Warkentin says some time was needed to find and contact those veterans living in the Peace.
