Cold weather breaks records in Grande Prairie

Winter weather in Grande Prairie over the past couple of days has broken records for the city. On Tuesday, Environment Canada says the windchill at the Grande Prairie Airport reached minus 34, a full two points colder than the minus 32 experienced on November 8, 1986.

Two other daily weather records from 1986 were also broken on Wednesday. The minimum dew point was minus 30.7 degrees, just below the minus 29.8 from 36 years ago, while the temperature dipped as low as minus 27.6 degrees, much colder than the minus 25.8 on that day in 1986.

Wednesday also set a new record for minimum high, warming up to just minus 19.1 degrees. Previously, the coldest high for the day was minus 17.4 degrees in 2006.

Grande Prairie is getting a reprieve from the cold to end the week, with a high of minus two degrees in the forecast for Remembrance Day.
