Annual Dunes clean up this weekend

A group of volunteers will spend their weekend cleaning up garbage that has been illegally dumped in the Wapiti Dunes recreation area. Last year more than 55,000 pounds was hauled out, but ESRD Education Officer Blaine Burke doesn’t expect there to be as much this year.

“People throughout the year are taking matters into their own hands, and there’s that peer pressure out there too; I’ve noticed folks are out there looking at garbage and looking for ownership of garbage and exposing them themselves.”

Burke adds that last year volunteers brought machinery that could grab bigger pieces of metal that had previously been left, leading to a bigger haul. Anything anyone can bring will help.

“[Anything] and everything is welcome so people show up with their pickup trucks and trailers or quads and top trailers or some folks show up who may have businesses with their front end loaders and those types of things. The more help and tools that we have, the quicker we’ll make a job of it.”

The cleanup runs from 9 to 2 Saturday. Volunteers are meeting across from the Dunes golf course entrance.
