Old Grande Prairie courthouse one step closer to historic designation

The Old Courthouse building is one step closer to being designated as a Municipal Historic Resource. Earlier this month Grande Prairie City Council issued a notion of intention, starting the 60 days for the public to share any oppositions they may have. The manager of Culture for the city Stephanie Cajolais says that the feedback period will close on December 3rd.

“The feedback that is received in opposition will be reviewed by the council, as the city is the owner of the property, and taken into consideration before the final decision to designate or not is made,” Cajolais says.

If the council ultimately decides to move forward with the designation Cajolais says that is the start of the city’s commitment.

“The city will have to ensure that that building maintains its appearance, and any future alterations are in line with guidelines for historic buildings.”

The city has set up an engagement page on their website about the designation, and where residents who are opposed can share their concerns.
