UPDATE: Canfor Road bridge to remain closed for repairs

UPDATE: The Canfor Road bridge over the Smoky River is expected to stay closed to traffic indefinitely. The tanker truck has been recovered and damage was done to the bridge during the fatal crash.

It will likely be closed until repairs can be done. Alberta OH&S remains on scene.

Grande Prairie RCMP would like to thank the public for their understanding in this tragic occurrence.

One person has died after a tanker truck went over the Smoky River Bridge on the Canfor Haul Road.

The Grande Prairie RCMP says the crash happened shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a preliminary investigation leading them to believe that the truck had gone off the bridge and submerged into the river. The man driving the truck was pronounced dead on scene.

The collision remains under investigation and the public is asked to still avoid the area. The Central Alberta Rescue Diving Society and Occupational Health and Safety is involved.
