Grande Prairie breaks 61-year-old rainfall record

The Grande Prairie Airport recorded 31.4 millimetres of rain Saturday, smashing the previous record for September 17th by nearly 10 millimetres. Previously, the most received on that day was 21.8 millimetres in 1961.

The rain started Friday evening, with 14.3 millimetres falling before midnight. Rain fell fairly consistently throughout the day Saturday, with few breaks. It stopped by 3 a.m. Sunday.

This summer was a fairly dry one for the Grande Prairie region. A total of 26.9 millimetres of rain fell in June, 33.1 millimetres in July, and 27.2 millimetres in August.

The normal for the city is roughly 72 millimetres in June, 71 millimetres in July, 52 millimetres in August, and 38 millimetres in September. August 2022 was also the warmest on record for the city, according to Environment Canada.
