CanWest Air finds new home in Peace River

CanWest Air’s air ambulance in Grande Prairie will be moving to Peace River. The company has reached a deal with Northern Air Charters and the Town of Peace River to buy a hangar at the Peace River Airport.

“We appreciate Northern Air Charters and the Town of Peace River for their work in making this happen,” says CanWest CEO Jake Fehr. “CanWest will continue to work with Advanced Paramedic Limited on providing excellent air ambulance services to the citizen of Peace River and northern Alberta.”

The air ambulance provider took over service in the town on April 1st, but there were no available hangars at the airport at the time. In the meantime, one air ambulance has been parked on the tarmac for emergencies, and the other in Grande Prairie for scheduled service.

Northern Air was the long-time operator for the region and fought Alberta Health Services’ decision to award CanWest contracts for eight locations across Alberta in March 2017. Its emergency injunction wasn’t granted and the switch went ahead in the spring.

In a social media post, the town says it was happy to help find a resolution to the transition.

“We support everyone’s vision of ensuring that the region continues to have access to excellent air ambulance services.”

CanWest will be taking over the previous RCMP hangar on lot 4, which will undergo some minor updates over the next few days. Both planes are intended to be moved by the end of July.
