County and city to continue animal shelter temporarily

Although the SPCA has officially shut down, the county and city will continue to offer services until something permanent is in place. The SPCA announced it was closing at the end of May 2016 after revealing it was $250,000 in debt. It owed $120,000 to the Canada Revenue Agency.

By April of 2017, they’d been able to pay off $75,000. Instead of trying to bail the SPCA out, the City and County of Grande Prairie agreed to open the regional animal care facility and will continue to support it until a better option is found.

The group has offered pound, adoption, and shelter services in partnership with the Edmonton Humane Society since taking over.
Adoptable animals are posted on the regional care facility’s Facebook page.

The facility was run by the SPCA since 1972.
