ANSO Collectives and Education Support Society is one of the eighteen non-profit groups getting money from the KMSC Law golf event this year. The group helps people in Ethiopia replenish their livestock, get education and start up a business.
Co-founder and President Chris Anderson says Ethiopians that want to start a business are given a $200 loan and if it goes well, they can get $400 the next year. One of the first ones was a salt business.
“They walked 200 kilometres, bought salt, put it on their backs, carried it back, divided it up and sold it for food purposes. They did this four times over the course of a year.”
Since being established, there has been 132 women’s micro-businesses created.
The golf event will also help seventeen other charities. The Art Gallery of Grande Prairie, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Disabled Transportation Society, GP Public School District Education Foundation, GP Catholic School Foundation, PACE, and PARDS are also receiving support. Funds are also going to the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation, Rotary After Five, Special Olympics GP, Centre for Creative Arts, Grande Prairie YMCA, Suicide Prevention Resource Centre, and GP & District Grief Support Association.
The event began at the Grande Prairie Golf and Country Club at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.
