UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Grande Prairie

UPDATE #2: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Grande Prairie, Wembley and DeBolt. Environment Canada meteorologists say they’re tracking two severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to toonie size hail and heavy rain.

One thunderstorm is 10 kilometred southeast of Grande Prairie and the other is near Debolt. These thunderstorms are moving to the northeast at 40 kilometres an hour.

UPDATE: The severe thunderstorm watch for the region has ended.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview region. Environment Canada says thunderstorms are expected to form late this afternoon and will last into this evening.

Some may become severe and could produce strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain.

The County of Grande Prairie is affected in areas near Grande Prairie, Wembley, Beaverlodge Hythe, Demmitt, Sexsmith and La Glace. The MD of Greenview is also affected.
