UPDATE: 111 employees being laid off as Grande Prairie Sears closes

UPDATE: There are currently 111 associates at the store in Grande Prairie, most of which are part-time. Sears Canada spokesperson Vincent Power adds that they are sad to see them go.

“The decision to close this store is part of the actions we need to take at this time, but it has nothing to do with the quality of our staff there who have been a great team and have provided excellent service to Sears customers in Grande Prairie for several years, and we will miss them within the Sears family.”

The Sears in Grande Prairie is one of 59 across the country closing. Sears Canada announced Thursday it is seeking court protection from its creditors and is closing the stores as part of its restructuring plan.

About 2,900 positions are being cut, and we’ve reached out to find out how many employees in Grande Prairie will be affected. When the stores will be closed has not yet been determined, but Sears says liquidation sales are expected.

All other stores in Canada will stay open, along with their online store. Warranties will remain valid.
