Grande Prairie wildfire hazard now very high

The wildfire hazard for the Grande Prairie Forest Area has been pushed up to very high. Wildfire information officer Melinda Paplawski says with a high of at least 28 degrees and wind gusting as high as 45 kilometres, flames could spread quickly if sparked. There’s also a possibility of lightning this afternoon and evening.

A fire advisory remains in effect for the region, and ones remain in effect for both the City and County of Grande Prairie. In the city, that means permits are needed for any burning or fireworks displays. In the county, anyone with a burn permit is asked not to use it, and no new ones will be issued.

So far this wildfire season, there have been 22 wildfires in the Grande Prairie region that have burned 4.76 hectares of land. The fire that started up last week near Little Smoky was completely extinguished Tuesday afternoon.
