Heavy rain, strong winds expected midweek

A special weather statement has been issued for the Grande Prairie region. Environment Canada says the area could get 30 to 40 millimetres of rain midweek, with 50 to 75 millimetres possible in some parts.

A strong low pressure system is expected to develop west of Edmonton near the B.C. border by Tuesday night, which will then move east-southeast through the province. The heaviest rain is forecast to spread from Hinton and Grande Prairie east to Edmonton, Cold Lake and Lloydminster.

Strong winds are also expected in much of the province. During the day Wednesday, winds will be from the north at 50 to 60 kilometres an hour, with gusts as high as 80 kilometres an hour. Environment Canada says a few gusts over 90 kilometres an hour are possible, but it’s too soon to say where.
