Wetland reclamation motion introduced by MLA Loewen

Grande Prairie – Smoky MLA Todd Loewen has introduced a motion aimed at improving wetland reclamation. The Wildrose Shadow Environment and Parks Minister is calling on the provincial government to consult directly with Alberta’s construction industry to come up with requirements to improve water storage in our ecosystems.

Those guidelines would cover remediation where development disturbs or removes a wetland, needs fill soil, or will be storing water for industrial use. Loewen argues that many people in the industry are already doing this, but they have to get permission from the government.

He wants it to instead be standard practice, saying it would save both taxpayers and industry money. The motion passed in the house Monday.
