Small fire breaks out in airport de-icing truck

A small fire broke out on the main apron of the Grande Prairie Airport this morning. Director of Terminal Services Todd Carter says something must have malfunctioned inside a de-icing truck.

“It has a Hotsy system in it that heats the glycol that sprays on the aircraft so it comes out warm to de-ice any ice on the wings. Within the burner box of that unit, it must have had something faulty in it that caused a little bit of a fire.”

The airport’s firefighters were able to extinguish the flames within minutes. The Grande Prairie Fire Department also responded.

Carter says there was no impact to operations and the incident was wrapped up by 6 a.m. What caused the fire is now under investigation.
