APRIL FOOL! Storm recruit Andrew Ference as skating coach

Have you checked the calendar yet? While we’d love another boost to the coaching lineup, it sounds like Ference won’t be making his way to the Storm just yet.

The Grande Prairie Storm have made another change to their coaching lineup. Former Edmonton Oilers captain Andrew Ference will be stepping in as skating coach, joining the team at their spring camp this weekend.

Ference did not play for the Oilers this season due to a hip injury, and it’s believed his NHL career is over. Assistant coach and business manager Dennis Rix says they were approached by the defenceman after their postseason run was cut short in the first round.

“He told us that if the Edmonton Oilers could dream of a playoff run, so could we. Really, I think he’s just bored.”

The Oilers are trying to move the remaining cap hit for Ference, as he’s still owed $3.25 million for the last year of his four-year contract. Rix thinks the Storm might be able to help.

“We’ve started up a new fundraising campaign called #FerenceForRent. If we can raise just $3 million of that total through a GoFundMe campaign and bake sales, we expect the Oilers will cover the other $250,000.”

The Storm are looking for an extra billet home for Ference as he stays in Grande Prairie this summer to help with development. Families get an honorarium and season tickets for taking him in. If the hockey club decides to keep him on for the regular season, they’ll likely move him to a Ranchlands apartment.
