Putting down the pack of cigarettes is hard for a lot of people and this week is dedicated to highlighting ways to do it. It’s National Non-smoking Week and Krystyn Berry with the Canadian Cancer Society says the health benefits are huge but someone has to want to quit.

“It’s important to understand that smoking is a serious addiction. If you are trying to help someone quit smoking, you can’t just make them. Think of it as supporting them in their journey.”

She says the tobacco use is the leading cause of premature and preventative deaths in Canada.

“It is responsible for 30 per cent of all cancer deaths in Canada. Lung cancer will kill more than 1,600 Albertans this year.”
