Construction for phase one of the Downtown Rehabilitation and Streetscapes project was supposed to finish up this fall but will now stretch into spring. City of Grande Prairie Planning and Construction Manager Matt Hinton says the weather and the timing that the tender went out are to blame. He adds that the first part of the work near Revolution Place has been completed but the area near Better Than Fred’s is still being worked on.
“Once you get to the intersection at 99th Avenue and 101st Street, they are finishing up the sidewalks and such there as well. They are currently getting it prepped for temporary concrete.”
He says crews will come back into these areas in the spring to complete it.
“They will remove the temporary hard surface and put in the new paving stones for the sidewalks. They will carry further north up to roughly 102nd Avenue for future work next year.”
The project is set to be done in four phases with the third and fourth phases to be decided on. In 2017, work will be done for phase two on 101st Avenue from the Golden Age Centre to 100 Street.
Hinton says all roads and sidewalks will be open for traffic downtown over the winter.
