City looking for feedback on future of Hillside area

The Hillside area of Grande Prairie has undergone many changes over the past several years, and more are in its future as it continues to grow. An Area Redevelopment Plan is in the works, that will look at issues like the future use of the large empty lot across from the CN Rail yard. Planner Reed Des Roches says they’re also considering design requirements for multi-family homes.

“We’ve heard from a lot of residents that they aren’t happy with the quality of building designs going up there right now, and so we’d like to hear from them on what we could do to allow for higher density while maintaining the character of the neighbourhood keeping the existing residents happy.”

People can learn more and share their thoughts at an open house at the Hillside Community School gym from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. A steering group is also being put together to help guide the project and Des Roches says its feedback will be instrumental.

“There’s a ton of information that the public can provide, such as where they’d like to see investment in the community in the future; things like park infrastructure or new streetscapes. We can work those types of suggestions into the plan, so the community has a huge role in shaping the project by letting us know what they need.”

They’re also looking at issues like parking and safety. Anyone who can’t make Wednesday’s open house can reach out to Des Roches directly at 780-513-5236 or [email protected]. The drop-in meeting will include pizza and refreshments.
