Grant gives Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance more sustainability

The Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance has again gotten support from the provincial government. Environment and Parks Minister Shannon Phillips made her way to Grande Prairie Tuesday to present the group with a $265,000 grant.

The organization reports on the state of the ecosystem and is in the second year of its integrated water management plan. Phillips says it’s important that they have sustainable funding.

“Nothing’s more important than water. Making sure that communities have the resources that they need to plan and to make responsible decisions in a massive watershed like the Mighty Peace is a priority for us. We see examples of excellent work happening both at the level of the board, the staff, and the many volunteers.”

The board’s membership is a diverse one, with representatives from agriculture, oil and gas, First Nations and municipalities. Board member and chair of the Métis Settlements General Council Alden Armstrong says the grant ensures they can continue to do their work.

“It’ll give us the stability required so we can maintain the staff that we have so we can deliver, ultimately, on the mandate.”

The Mighty Peace Watershed covers 30 per cent of Alberta’s landscape.
