UPDATE: County of Grande Prairie to lift fire ban later today

UPDATE: The City of Grande Prairie has lifted its fire ban. Fire pits are again allowed, but permits are needed for any burning.

The fire ban remains in effect in the County of Grande Prairie including the Towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, Wembley and Village of Hythe. The fire ban will be lifted at 4:00 pm May 20th.

Thanks to wet and cool weather across much of Alberta, the government has lifted both the fire and OHV bans for most of the province. The only forest protection areas that are still under bans are Lac La Biche and Fort McMurray.

Both the City and County of Grande Prairie still have municipal fire bans in place, although it’s possible they could be lifted as well. Albertans should double check albertafirebans.ca to find out about any bans, restrictions or advisories where they are.

Although conditions have improved, it’s still important for residents to do their part to prevent wildfires. That includes fully extinguishing campfires and stopping frequently to check for debris in off-highway-vehicle hotspots like the exhaust and under the seat.
